The Culture and Environment of the Arts

Researches for building sustainable environments for arts creation The studies of cultural environment for theatre include not only the objective analysis of environments for arts but also interaction to create an environment that enables arts to develop themselves. Aware of this, the course consists of three research areas (theoretical research, educational research, and creative interaction) that overlap with each other, and our activities are fueled in these compound areas. "Arts / theatre policies around the world", "cultural policies in metropolises", "theatre and nationality", "research on festivals", "arts and education", and "studies on dramaturgy" are the topics of our research, which will see publication in the near future.

1. Theoretical Research

We analyse political / juristic / diplomatic / economical / social / aesthetic environments for arts and cultures, bringing into view the complexity of interrelations from multiple / international / interdisciplinary perspectives.

2. Educational Research

By researching the spread of education and cultivation of human resources, we develop a theory on art education. In addition to monthly workshops for Global COE associate fellows, we hold seminars by inviting guest speakers.

3. Creative Interaction

In association with those who work in the field of art creation, we encourage creative interaction from an academic standpoint. By bringing about a critical perspective, we would like to build a feedback relation between theoretical research and artistic creation.

Our research field has such a short history that methodology is subject to insecurity as a result of the scarcity of academic accumulation, and to the dynamism with which we have to explore a new area. We plan to develop the Global COE associate fellows into theatre people with the subjective ability to think and act as well as do excellent research, that is to say, people with a balance between theoretical knowledge and experience.

Our course consists of members active in theoretical research and and in art creation inside and outside of the University. In addition to giving them advice about research and career building, we promote practical research in cooperating with Setagaya Public Theatre, the New National Theatre Tokyo, and Tokyo International Arts Festival. Moreover, we invite researchers and intellectuals from overseas as guest speakers in order to create a hub of international activities in this field.
