概要	『ヴェニスの商人』を論じる際、ユダヤ人迫害の問題を避けることができないが、 実はカトリック教徒迫害も重要な要素となっている。この作品は、信仰心を 「白塗り」して覆い隠す必要のあった時代背景を念頭に書かれたものである。 ルネサンス期の女流作家からマーガレット・アットウッドまで幅広い分野の研究で 知られているWynne-Davies氏が、シェイクスピアが生まれ育ったストラットフォードの ギルド教会を手掛かりにして、よく知られたこの作品を全く新しい視点から読み 解いていく。（使用言語：英語） While discussions of The Merchant of Venice often focus on the issue of anti-Semitism, the problem of anti-Catholicism is just as significant to this play. Dr. Marion Wynne-Davies, known for her research on a wide range of subjects from female writers in the Renaissance to Margaret Attwood, will locate the relationship between Portia and Shylock in the story of St Helena that was depicted in the Guild Chapel in Stratford. This will show how the play, refusing to promote a particular faith, points towards the danger of admitting to any religion and the subsequent need for concealment, or 'whitewash'.

University of Dundee副学部長などを経て2007年よりUniversity of Surrey教授。
