| 概要 | 伝説的な役者によるシェイクスピア上演と批評家からの酷評。ギャリック、 キーン、ケンブルなど今でも名前が残る役者が活躍した18世紀後半から 19世紀にかけてのシェイクスピア上演にはこのような矛盾があった。その 原因を、ロマン主義と小説の普及という2つの問題を絡めつつ、検討し、 どのようにしてマクレディ、フェルプス、アーヴィングの時代まで発展して いったのかを考察していく。 使用言語：英語 Why and in what ways did Shakespearean stage hit a low ebb during the early years of the Romantic Age, despite the abilities of Garrick, the Keens and the Kembles? Why were critics like Hazlitt so dissatisfied with what they saw? A key to understanding this seems to lie with the relationship between live theatre and the Romantic sensibility that proved at least temporarily incompatible, at the time of the rise of the English novel. This lecture will explore this problem and how matters proceeded on into the age of Macready, Phelps, and Irving.
